„Augustus“ ist ein historischer Roman. Das ist ein Genre, das in Deutschland keinen besonders guten Ruf hat, sieht sich der Schriftsteller doch allzu schnell dem Verdacht des Seichten ausgesetzt. Aber Williams spielt in einer anderen Kategorie. Ihm geht es um den Preis, den jeder im Leben zu zahlen hat.
